The AdventureSmith team is comprised of a series of consultants and educators in field of Adventure Education, Challenge Course and Canopy Tour Design and Installation, Organizational Development Consulting, and Marketing. We believe our advantage is rooted in our diversity and breadth of experience.
Michael R. Smith, MTD, President of AdventureSmith, Inc.
Mike completed his undergraduate degree in Wilderness Leadership at Prescott College in 1998 and his Master of Training and Development at Oakland University in 2004. His field experience includes six years as a field instructor at the Pacific Crest Outward Bound School (now Outward Bound Wilderness) and eleven years as a high ropes challenge course facilitator and trainer for S.T.E.P.S., Inc. In addition to developing AdventureSmith, Mike continues to work as an employee of S.T.E.P.S., Inc., where he is responsible for corporate training, program development, marketing, and web design. Although frequently found in the office, his true passion is facilitating and instructing adventure challenge programs and working with corporations to enhance human performance. Mike authored and self-published A Climber's Guide to Prescott Arizona, A Facilitator's Guide to Adventure Challenge Programming, and A Guide's Guide to Canopy Tours. Mike's interests include mountaineering, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and web design.
Anthony Byram, Web Designer/Programmer.
Anthony came to AdventureSmith in 2003 and currently serves as our lead programmer. Fluent in the many languages of the web, Anthony attends to core development projects including database management, web accessibility standards, and backend support. In addition to brining seven years of web development experience, Anthony is also an avid climber and has a passion for the outdoors. He is currently pursuing a degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in Pure Mathematics. His hobbies include indoor and outdoor rock climbing and Go (an ancient board game of Chinese origin).
David Brassfield, M.A., President of S.T.E.P.S., Inc.
A sometime teacher of college English, scholarly editor, writer of technical publications, and wilderness instructor, David founded S.T.E.P.S., Inc., in 1990. His undergraduate study in English literature was at Haverford College, Connecticut and he received his Masters degree from the University of Michigan in English language and literature. David has spent the past twenty-one summers as the Asst. Director for Wilderness Tripping for White Pine Village (formerly Silverman Village), a non-sectarian residential summer camp for boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 who require a highly structured and emotionally supportive environment.
Rhonda Sandweiss, B.A., Challenge Course Manager and Senior Trainer.
Rhonda has been with S.T.E.P.S., Inc., since 1994 and currently oversees staffing and staff development. Her undergraduate studies were in education at Eastern Michigan University and led to a teaching certificate. After spending time in the classroom, Rhonda followed her heart to the outdoors where she felt she could make a more significant impact. Rhonda is a member of the AEE, ACCT, and Access Fund. During the summer she has served as the director of several backcountry programs including Tamarack Camps and Wooden Acre. She enjoys indoor and outdoor rock climbing in her spare time, and has competed at the national level.
Denny Teasdle, M.S., Organizational Development Consultant and Facilitator.
Denny joined S.T.E.P.S., Inc., in 2001 after ending a long career at General Motors. He received his Master's degree from Central Michigan University in HR Administration and Organizational Development. Denny began his career with GM Pontiac Motor Division and was one of the founding members of Saturn's Consulting Services which led him all over the globe conducting organizational development programs and adventure-based learning programs. He lives with his wife in Pontiac and has three married children. Denny's interests include working on his house and in the yard.
John Walker, Director of Bonsai Design, Lead Builder.
John has been a long time employee of S.T.E.P.S., Inc., starting in 1991. Beginning as a facilitator, John quickly found his passion to be designing and constructing innovative high ropes courses, climbing towers, zip lines and team challenge courses. John left S.T.E.P.S. briefly to pursue studies in design at the University of Colorado and the California College of Arts. Combining his passion for design and the environment with more than 13 years of challenge course construction and residential construction experience, John's course designs are both functional, well-built, and beautiful. John's hobbies include design and construction, rock climbing, white water paddling, and snow boarding. |
